Don’t Get Tricked by Pop-Ups and Scareware 🎃

Don’t Get Tricked by Pop-Ups and Scareware 🎃

If a window suddenly appears saying your computer is “infected” or your “security has expired,” take a deep breath — and don’t click anything.

Scareware pop-ups are one of the oldest tricks in the scammer’s book. They’re designed to frighten you into downloading fake antivirus programs, calling phony support numbers, or paying for services you don’t need.

During the fall shopping season, scammers ramp up these tactics — hoping you’ll panic and act fast. Here’s how to spot them before they trick you:

👻 1. The Pop-Up Panic Button

Scareware often uses bold red warnings, fake countdown timers, or urgent “click here” buttons to create pressure.

Real antivirus software never uses pop-ups in your web browser.

If you see one, close your browser immediately or restart your computer — never click the alert.

💀 2. The “Call This Number” Scam

Many fake alerts display a toll-free number claiming to connect you to “Microsoft Support.” Microsoft will never call you or display a phone number for technical support.

If you call, you’ll reach scammers who try to take remote control of your computer or demand payment.

🕸️ 3. The Fake Antivirus or Cleanup Tool

Some scareware downloads mimic real security tools — even using logos and names that sound legitimate. Once installed, they may disable real antivirus protection or steal your information.

PCRescue’s Fall Cleanup includes a full malware scan and professional removal of unwanted software, so you can be sure your protection is genuine.
