🧹 Fall Tech Cleanup: 5 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Devices

Just like your home benefits from a seasonal cleaning, your tech devices need a little attention too. As we head into fall, this is the perfect time to give your computer a fresh start — clearing out the clutter, speeding things up, and preventing future problems.

Here are 5 easy steps to get your devices running their best again.

1. Delete Junk Files and Old Downloads

Old installers, documents you don’t need, and temporary files can build up quickly. Head into your Downloads folder and clear out anything you don’t need. On Windows, use Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense. On Mac, try Manage Storage under “About This Mac.”

2. Uninstall Apps You Don’t Use

If you haven’t used a program in months, it’s probably safe to remove. Fewer apps = fewer background tasks and fewer security risks.

• On Windows: Settings > Apps > Installed apps

• On Mac: Drag to Trash or use a third-party uninstaller

Note: If you are unsure about an application, leave it. Only remove applications that you recognize and know you don not use. 

3. Clear Your Browser Cache

Web browsers store temporary data that can slow things down. Clearing your cache not only frees space but also fixes weird website glitches.

• In Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari: Settings > Clear Browsing Data

• In Windows CTRl+Shift+Del will also bring up the cache cleaning window in most browsers. In Mac use Cmd+Shift+Del

4. Reboot Your Router

If your internet feels sluggish, your router might just need a restart. Power it off for 10 seconds, then back on. While you’re at it, make sure it’s in a central location, away from thick walls or metal objects.

5. Physically Clean Your Device

Yes — grab a microfiber cloth! Wipe down your screen, keyboard, and vents. Use compressed air to gently clear dust from ports and fans (especially desktops or laptops that run hot).
