Keep Your Devices Updated Before Holiday Shopping
Dec 01, 2025The holiday deals are already rolling in, and so are the scams. One of the easiest ways to protect yourself while shopping online is making sure your computer, phone, and browser are fully updated.
Why does this matter? Updates fix the security holes scammers rely on — the same holes used to deliver fake shopping pop-ups, redirect you to scam sites, or steal payment info. A quick update can block all of it.
What to update before you shop
-
Windows / macOS — Security patches, app fixes, and browser-related vulnerabilities.
-
Browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox) — Most attacks happen here. Always run the latest version.
-
Antivirus / antimalware — Make sure definitions are current so it can catch fake shopping sites and malicious ads.
-
Mobile devices — A lot of holiday shopping happens on phones. Update iOS/Android and apps like Safari, Chrome, Amazon, etc.
Tips for safer holiday shopping
-
Restart your device after updates — some protections don’t activate otherwise.
-
Don’t shop on an outdated computer or one that hasn’t been touched in months.
-
If something feels “off,” close the tab and open a fresh browser window.
-
For extra safety, use a separate browser profile just for shopping.
