How the Tech Support Scam Works

1. A fake pop-up appears — usually while visiting a compromised website or clicking a malicious ad.

2. It impersonates Microsoft, Apple, or even your antivirus. The message insists your device is infected or blocked.

3. You’re told to call a number or click to connect with a “technician.” 

4. The scammer takes remote control of your PC, shows fake “error logs,” and then demands payment to “fix” it — often $200–$500.

The screen may look professional. The phone rep might even sound legitimate.

How to Tell It’s Fake

• Real error messages never include phone numbers.

• Your antivirus or Windows Defender won’t lock your screen or speak out loud.

• Microsoft, Apple, and PCRescue never ask you to pay to remove a virus over the phone.

If your browser locks up, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (Windows) or Force Quit (Mac), then restart your browser.
