Think You’ve Been Scammed? Here’s What to Do Next
Nov 07, 2025It happens faster than you think — one click, one form, one phone call, and suddenly you’re worried you’ve been scammed.
Take a breath. You’re not alone, and you can take back control right now.
Here’s what to do — step by step — if you think you’ve been caught in a scam or gave out personal info.
🧠
1. Don’t Panic — Act Fast, Not Frantic
Scammers want you to feel overwhelmed. Stay calm and focus on what you can do immediately.
🔒
2. Disconnect or Shut Down Your Device
If you clicked a suspicious link, disconnect from Wi-Fi or power off your device to stop any further activity.
💳
3. Contact Your Bank or Credit Card Company
If you entered payment info or sent money, call your bank’s fraud line right away.
Most institutions can reverse or freeze transactions if caught early.
🔐
4. Change Your Passwords
Change passwords for your email, banking, and social media accounts — especially if they use the same or similar logins.
Use strong, unique passwords (or a password manager).
🧹
5. Scan and Clean Your Device
Use your antivirus or schedule a PCRescue checkup.
We’ll look for remote access tools, hidden downloads, and signs of compromise.
📞
6. Report It
Report scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov
It helps authorities track active scams — and it’s surprisingly quick to do.
